Section 3 - Dumbwaiter crank
The crank is scenery in the Dining hall. The initial appearance is "The broken crank is on the floor where [we] dropped it." [1]
The description of the crank is "[if loose]The crank was apparently used to raise and lower dumbwaiters in the dining hall. Now it's broken.[otherwise]The crank is placed so that it's evidently used to raise and lower the dumbwaiters."
Definition: The crank is loose if it is not fixed in place.
Instead of turning the fixed in place crank:
say "The crank seems to be stuck and after applying some more force it snaps off into [our] hand. [We] place it down and curse [our] bad luck.";
now the crank is not scenery;
now the crank is not fixed in place.
Instead of turning the loose crank:
say "The crank is broken. It will never turn anything again."
Note
[1]. The initial appearance will not be shown while the crank is scenery. When the crank comes loose and is placed directly in the room it's shown in the room description.
