The pants are clothing worn by the player. They are plural-named. The indefinite article is "a pair of". The description is "Your green pants. Very comfortable. No pockets, though, which is a real inconvenience."
Understand "trousers" and "pair of" and "pair" as the pants.
Instead of searching the pants when the pants are worn:
say "That's Little Scotty in there.[if the creature is present and the pants are worn][line break][c]Find anything? I didn't think so,[c] [the creature] remarks."
Instead of searching the pants when the player does not have the pants:
say "****.[if the creature is present][line break][c]Good, that's a start. The next step is to actually pick them up and [italic type]wear them[roman type],[c] [the creature] says.".
